Just an outstanding picture book full of "Complete Locations" from all the SW movies with cross sections, maps, beautiful drawings, fold outs and details about each.Where to start? My daughter, age 12, will be Rey for Halloween. We've made a decent replica of her outfit and staff. I saw the cover of the DK(we've used DK for travel many times to give you a look at what you'll see) showing Rey's AT-AT home. It lays it out on 2 pages( and the book is a large book with ~200 pages, everything in color) all the many details about her home with trap doors, living space, 'garage' for her speeder, Y-wing salvaged computer and flight simulator, etc; including short write-ups about the details, e.g., she wove her sleeping hammock as a child. Also, on the Episode 7 chapter, there's a neat map of Jakku, that lays out the land and where Rey travels, Maz's castle, Resistance base, First Order Military, and Starkiller Base. The kiddoes are hoping for a Rey sequel soon. The colorful book starts with a forward by SW production designer Doug Chiang. There's an intro about the Republic and Empire showing their galaxy and giving interesting planet profiles(I know so much now). Episode One includes: Naboo, Otah Gunga(think Jar Jar), Droid ship, Mos Epsa on several pages including a pull-out, Watto's Junkshop, Anakin's hovel, several battle fields and cities.Episode 2 goes into detail about those prolonged speeder chases, Outlander club, Jedi temple, romantic Naboo retreats, Kamino, Tipoca city, Tatooine and space ports, Geonosis(the ringed planet), droid factory and many more talking about the different battles and forces involved. Actually, flipping through this volume has clarified many things about these movies which I found more complicated than the earlier ones(Episodes 4-6).Episode 3: Coruscant Battle(quite detailed), Jedi temple complex, Palatine's office, Utapau, Pau city, Kashyyyk(Think Wookies. It's making my head spin with all these names!), a Wookiee tree(kids like it), more battle fronts, Mustafar and the famous, and, I think, over drawn out, as far as the movie, (Episode 3 is not my favorite) duel scene, Polis Massa, and a medcenter.Episode 4(my favorite episode): Tatooine map in detail, Lars homestead, Ben's house(neat place!), Mos Eisley(of course) and the Cantina(I can hear the music), Death Star cross section, and the Great Temple seen near the end off the movie(Hmm, never thought much about that).Episode 5: a really nice expansive fold-out of Battle of Hoth and Echo base, Dagobah and Yoda's house, Cloud City.Episode 6: Jabba's Palace(No Pizza Hut!) and throne room, Battle of Endor, Ewok village(again, a kid's favorite), Death Star- numero 2, Emperor's lair, and Executor Command Tower. Finally, there's a table of context and index, but just browsing will keep you and your children fascinated for hours. Just a brilliant work with creative, incredible drawings- food for the mind, fun for the heart.P.S. Sorry about any misspellings. My Spell Checker was going crazy!

This is like one of those intricate cross section cutaway artbooks that Star Wars have been publishing over the years. Some of the content in this book may have been featured in other books but it's no big deal because this is now the definitive book on all Star Wars locations now.The content is arranged from Episode I to the latest VII. It starts off with brief information to the galaxy and the planets, of which you can find more information in the other book Star Wars: The Essential Atlas. The bulk of the book features the beautiful detailed illustrations of key locations and places featured in the films. The artists who contributed these amazing cutaway artworks are Hans Jenssen, Richard Chasemore and Kemp Remillard. It's a good thing that this 192-page hardcover is large enough to show all those wonderful little details in the art. It's really cool to be able to look at the cross sections and be reminded of where you have seen the characters on screen. There are lots of moments where I went "Hey, that's the place where they stood!" While the film can only show a glimpse of the environment, with the drawings in this book, you can spend your time looking closely at the details, layout of buildings, bases, rooms, cities and aerial views. In addition to the art, there are a good amount of film stills. All the visuals are heavily annotated. There are labels pointing to interesting spots in the drawings, captions that give background and movie recap. The thing that always leaves me puzzled is where are the toilets. I mean, where to all those people go to relieve themselves?Since the last movie is Episode VII, there are new drawings included, such as for Jakku, Rey's Home, Maz's Castle, Resistance Base, Starkiller Base. All in all, it's a really beautiful and informative book that all Star Wars fans should have.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Incredibly detailed book that feels more like a college textbook than a work of fiction. The authors have painstakingly brought to life your favorite locations and provide a myriad of notations and details that only the biggest Star Wars nerd would love. If you are even considering this book, then make the purchase!Incredible illustrations, charts, maps, and new expanded universe information make this a must have.Only minor quibble is the print can be very small in places.

I've purchased several books in the "complete" series by this same publisher, and Star Wars Complete Locations has impressed me the most. The reason is because it not only are there all the little details and callouts I've come to love, but it presents them in a context that makes them more meaningful. For example, there are several large battle and city spreads, where it has all the usual detail (this house, this event, this creature, that character) but then it *also* shows you timelines, action sequences, and linked events... you can re-live how a scene unfolded from a new perspective. There's the path the speeder chase took through Coruscant, a dissection of the battle of the Gungans vs. the Trade Federation, and more. It's fantastic... buy this book!

You have to be a fan with time on your hands to enjoy this. If you are, and if you want more than you get from the films, this is a really cool way to see if what you've imagined was right. Great fun and beautifully illustrated.

I think I'm having more fun reading it than my 4yo! There's lot of details in the drawings to spend time looking at and lots of stuff to read. Wish there was less prequel stuff though.

A must for Star Wars lovers...grandson loved this book. He is almost 9

Another great book of information.

This book is well done. It is an inspiring story that must be told. It is about the Warsaw Jewish ghetto in World War 2 . It is an account of human suffering. Irene Sendler, a young Polish girl, organizes her friends into a network that is responsible for saving the lives of 2500 Jewish children. The reader is spared nothing, there is inhumane and brutal treatment by the Nazi. Irene is unbelievably brave, and a wise and excellent organizer. The Germans wanted to eradicate the city of Warsaw, and they almost did it. The Jewish children were an important target for the Naizi.Irene smuggled them out of the ghetto in many ingenious ways. There are numerous names, but her operation needed all of these people. Mazzeowrites well and has handled the story perfectly.

This truly is an extraordinary book about an extraordinary woman. I couldn't put it down. Reasonable women don't make history, they say, and certainly Irena Sendler was not a "reasonable woman". She was a zealot, driven by a strong moral compass, a deep sense of purpose, and unbelievable courage to put an indelible footprint on the meaning of humanity amidst unbelievable inhumanity. But what particularly sets her apart, I think, was her unique ability to translate these traits into action - to attract others to the cause and to organize their efforts toward a common goal, always under intense stress and just one small misstep from disaster. No question she was totally devoted to the cause, often at the expense of other facets of her life. She was no role model for work-life balance. But through her efforts the lives of some 2,500 children were saved. Surely that's balance of another sort.Anyway, Sendler's is a gripping story and Tilar Mazzeo, as readers of her previous books know, is a gripping story-teller. She does what so many scholars and teachers of history fail to do - bring the events and characters of her story to life. She is an indefatigable researcher who has a fine eye for details, but couples this with a deft narrative style that keeps things moving along at a good clip. Fair warning, though; this is not an easy story to be drawn into - the milieu is so unbelievably horrible and gruesome - and good does not always triumph over evil. But there are enough times when it does to restore one's faith in human nature and provide a ray of hope for the future. So thanks, Tilar. You've hit another home run..

This is a newly written book about Irena Sendler, the Polish Catholic social worker who saved over 2500 Jewish children during the Holocaust. She smuggled them out, one by one, in most cases, from the Warsaw Ghetto, in which thousands of Polish Jews were crammed, starving, likely to be shot at any time, or forced to board trains for extermination camps. (Though for most of the time no one knew for sure the destination of the trains.....later rumors began to spread, but people still found it hard to believe....).Irena Sendler worked with many others, but was the moral and physical leader of her group.....she took daily risks, going into the Ghetto and then talking Jewish families into giving up their children to her, based on just the hope that they would safer with her organization than left with their families. (In most cases, the children were hidden in convents and among sympathetic Polish families, who all knew they risked their lives and their family's lives by taking in Jewish children).Irena Sendler wanted to try to reunite these children with their families after the war....therefore she hid each child's name in a glass jar, buried in a friend's garden......(That is why the older book about her is called "Life in a Jar".....it is also an excellent book....and was instrumental in leading to Sendler being nominated for a Nobel prize.....)Of course, almost all the families of these children did not survive the war......So few people really cared to know what was going on in those years......only a few risked it all to try to save some people......she was one, and was, sadly, forgotten by history until very recently.....I'm glad she is now being recognized for her deeds......

Warsaw, Poland, according to the author nicknamed "the Paris of Eastern Europe" for its colorful streets, lively cafes, and intellectual ferment before the Nazi invasion in World War II, became one of the most grim and lethal places on earth for the next five years. If you rendered support to the resistance, the Gestapo would torture you ruthlessly then kill you. If on the other hand, you collaborated with the Germans, the resistance would find you and put a bullet in you. If you tried to hide out, roving bands of self-appointed bounty-hunters would rat you out to either the Gestapo or the resistance, receiving no more than a loaf of stale bread or a sack of rotten potatoes in exchange for your life. If you managed to avoid all of the above, then you were free to die of starvation, cold exposure, one of many epidemics of typhus, or simple despair. In the midst of all this stood a band of true heroes, risking all to oppose tyranny and fascism, putting their lives on the line every day to save lives of the innocent. Irena Sendler - the 'female Schindler' - stood at the nexus of a network of jewish and Polish resistance cells. As a Catholic social worker, Irena created and maintained an underground railroad to spirit children out of the Warsaw ghetto and into safety, literally putting her own life at risk day after day for years on end. This is her amazing, carefully researched, dramatically told story of noble spirit, boundless energy, cheeky deception, and personal courage worthy of the bravest Navy SEAL. Read it on the edge of your seat; for enlightenment, entertainment, and perhaps most of all, for homage to Irena and her many beloved fellow resistance fighters, many of whom lived, fought, and died unsung, lost in the fog and chaos of war.

This is THE BOOK to get for the Japanophile in your family. Not only does the book have the actual translation of this 900 year old classic work about gardening, but it is also a look into the aesthetic philosophy of garden beauty. The authors' commentary goes into nature, geomancy and taboos and other matters about the classic work. The book has index, glossary and ample footnotes. A quote to make you chuckle states, "When a stone from the mountains or riverbeds is set in the manner of deities, it will become a 'demon stone', there are many cases throughout the country of trouble stemming from doing this". I will treasure this book forever.

exquisite

Product used for research for UCLA extension course on History of the Designed Landscape

This is a very interesting & in-depth book. It isn't for anyone who just wants to have a general idea of gardening in Japan. You have to enjoy history to really be able to love this book. Not that it's a "history book" as such, but it follows garedening in Japan in the same way a book detailing life under the Tudors might be written. You learn to see gardening connected to the social climate, as well as learning about gardening techniques.

Just as described

Required for my course. I tried to get a cheap and relatively new one. This is it. Great. I would recommend this.

Esoteric and fascinating. And relaxing. The art of placing stones.

splendid! ... helps to understand cultural context behind gardening design.
