Introduction to the Looking-Glass Reality The biggest implication of psi phenomena is that we are potentially aware of everything in the entire universe. As mentioned in Chapter 1, experimental research over the past fifty years has confirmed that awareness of psi is dependent on one's state of consciousness, one's attitude, motivation, relaxation and other psychological (mental) aspects. We are separated from this potential omniscience by the thinnest of veils. In scientific terms this veil is call 'filter theory'. We would go totally crazy if we were aware of everything in the entire Universe even for only one second; so we need filters to block out all but the most essential items from our conscious awareness. Unfortunately this trend has gone too far, and the pressures of living in a city have made most city people so blocked that they aren't even aware of what their close friends and family are feeling, let alone whether or not some distant relative is in need of help. We have as a race become insensitive - or desensitised, mainly as a result of living in cities where the pressure of so many people and all their thoughts and emotions is so great that we have to blank out all but the most immediate perceptions or go totally crazy. So now we have to reverse the trend and become more aware, more sensitive, open up the filters a little bit, and open our psychic, as well as our physical, eyes and ears. This of course is easiest in the country! Some people call this process of increasing awareness 'becoming aware of the subconscious', since it is only in conscious awareness that we are so blocked, and the potential omniscience is all there in the subconscious. About the Author
Lee Judah Ames (January 8, 1921 – June 3, 2011 ) was an American artist noted for his Draw 50... learn-to-draw books. He was born in Manhattan, New York. He has since led a career as an advertising artist, fine artist, cartoonist, designer, animation in-betweener, illustrator, and as an artist-in residence at Doubleday. I had suffered from terrible RJ for about 2 weeks. Fell into the trap of quizzing my GF of 6 months about a sexual encounter she had before we went “exclusive”. I got way more details than I needed and thought I would easily get over it at first...but it chipped away at me to the point where I wouldn’t talk to her and wanted to break up with her. Our relationship was perfect up until that point and I didn’t want to jeopardize it. After reading a few online forums I still got the same anxiety only a few hours later, or when waking up. But I feel like a different person after reading this. I don’t recognize the man that I was beforehand. I know it is not an instant cure, but I’m confident I’m heading into the right direction. And it’s made me realize that I need to change my outlook on life in general. Thank you!

Oh thank goodness for this book.. It helped me tremendously.. I knew i had a problem, and i didn't even know what it was called, somehow someway i found this book online and it has become my north star.. The term "Retroactive" Jealousy is the perfect way to describe what I've been dealing with.. i thought jealousy was just jealousy, that it was all the same, but no, Retroactive Jealousy is a different kind and it's much more manipulative and needs a different method of help to overcome.. This book did it for me. I have broken free from the spiraling hell hole of demonizing my partners and their past.. It's not a huge book, you can tackle this in a day or two but take your time with it and practice it and digest the exercises, and CERTAINLY read it till the very last page because there's a VERY powerful exercise at the end that really put the final nail in this horrible coffin for me and made me feel like i truly moved on from this.. To the Author, your book has given me the power to overcome this and take all of my energy back and use it to propel my life to reach it's full potential. Thank you.

This book is a lot better than I thought it would be. I've read a number of guides and tips on how to handle RJ, but nothing as in depth as this. This isn't a basic"how-to" guide, it helps you understand what really goes on in your mind when you are having negative or unhelpful thoughts, which in turn allows you to get to the root of the issue and solve it. It takes focus and effort but with this book you'll have a better understanding and how to overcome RJ. Once you detach yourself from RJ you'll become happier and more confident. The help is within this book.

Unlike several other nameless, faceless internet marketers peddling advice on retroactive jealousy, Zachary Stockill is the real deal. I read his book because I’ve been suffering from debilitating, painful thoughts about my girlfriend's past on and off for years. This book put the final nail in the coffin of my RJ. My favorite part of this book was Chapter 9 - Don't overvalue your partner.This chapter discusses that your partner is a mammal just like you. He/she probably has the same desires and wants as you did before you met him/her. He/she did what they felt was in their best interest at the time, and it had nothing to do with you.Your partner is a sexual being, and was long before he/she met you. This was the best takeaway for me.

This book provides simplicity to the complex and often misunderstood symptoms associated with retroactive jealousy. Insecurity and an insecure attachment in one's childhood contribute to this painful obsessive compulsive disorder or severe anxiety. This book provides a safe, comfortable way to look at the constellation of symptoms with this kind of jealousy and provides ways to heal. Hope and relief will be felt and more compassion towards oneself as well. Thank you for bringing this wisdom to all.

As my headline suggests, I found this book short but sweet. It took me three days to go through it - a total of three to four hours of non-stop reading. I enjoyed the simplicity of its layout in two parts: the problem and the solution. The disclaimer in the beginning that the author includes is important: he is not a trained psychotherapist - but experience has a voice and strength of its own, and his personal experience with this topic gives this short book authenticity and relevance.I've always believed that a lot of our emotional and physical struggles are symptoms of much larger issues. Retroactive jealousy is one manifestation of deeply embedded insecurity. I have always felt confident about myself - my looks, my smarts, my brains. But I've never really felt emotionally secure. This book is just another witness to the idea that instead of focusing so much on the symptoms and how to treat them, it is good to take several steps back and see what we can do to improve the major areas of our lives and to find balance in our physical, spiritual, emotional and mental well-being. When we do this, the symptoms take care of themselves.I enjoyed the practical exercises and look forward to seeing their results.This book doesn't promise immediate results. That's why I like it.

I know everyone has their own literary tastes, but I cannot fathom how anyone can like this book. It's a seemingly endless incoherent stream of consciousness written in a presumably imagined vernacular. I actually had to read about the book to figure out that it may or may not be about Belfast during the 70s (There! Saved you $10 and a few hours).The book's plot is almost non-existent. The character development equals that found in mid-term papers from 7th grade creative writing classes. The narrative is vague and non-sensical to the point of giving you anxiety.Every now and then the Man Booker judges miss the mark. Man Booker winners share common surrealistic themes, with winners being unique and bleeding edge...something that hasn't been done before. Sometimes the judges choose art over literature, discounting the literary deficiencies for the artistic vision and creativity. In this case, the judges selected an art installation. Literary garbage. But unique...a writing style that has never been tried before. The problem is, there is a reason it has never been tried. Because it doesn't work. It is miserable and nauseating to read and should have never been published.I would rate this zero starts if I had the option.

I am in the minority it seems. I struggled to enjoy this book. The author's writing style was extraordinarily difficult for me. None of the characters were named. They were referred to as "middle sister", "Somebody McSomething", "maybe boyfriend", "third brother -in-law", etc., was tedious and maddening. The writing style of this book was distracting. Long, dense paragraphs that were hard to follow. I gave up after 100 grueling pages.Once again, a Booker Prize winner has been unreadable for me. When will I learn?

Fascinating funny....so well written, with inner thoughts I never brought to consciousness. I was a social worker in Belfast during this time. It all feels so real.

All a novel should be and the best I can recall reading in years upon years. I will be gobsmacked if this does not win the Booker Prize. I am astounded that there are so few reviews and that they are, on balance, quite poor. There is so much going on at so many levels in this story, all masterfully executed. One thought for those unaccustomed to the dialect who may find the language a bit of an obstacle - consider the audiobook. For me the language is the central joy of this novel, but there’s SO much more beyond that to think about here: history, politics, social psychology and pathology, interpersonal dynamics, gender roles, and more.ETA: this exquisite novel did indeed win the Booker prize, and all is right with my world - thank you, Ms. Burns!

Perhaps it’s not right to invent a title for a review that concatenates the title and author of the book under consideration but in this case it seems so appropriate. This novel so well written, so lyrically Irish, such dark humour hurt me, burnt me. I’ve not read anything else that so successfully conveys what it must have been like to live through The Troubles of Northern Ireland and the impact this had on the minds of the people who felt they had no choice but to endure and survive those times as best they could.We are told the active voice of the principal character, nameless Middle Sister, a girl of 18 , of events unfolding around and over her, covering a period of just a few months. Through rambling sentences spiced with recall and speculation a current and historical profile of unnamed neighbourhoods (I guess Belfast) emerge populated by lithe, criminally inclined, politically bloated, blighted as well as delightful inhabitants.Burn’s skilfully conveys the agony of living in a repressive society beset with tribal loyalties and fear. I had to force myself to keep reading Burn’s intimately affective, ‘fictional’ account and accept the shadowy presence of clumsy British occupying soldiers and violent IRA patriots.Middle Sister is stalked by a powerful figure in the resistance: Milkman. He is married, in his thirties, a looming criminal. The threat of his presence alone in the absence of touch is nevertheless too close, visceral, overwhelming. She is incredibly brave. She feels she must protect her bisexual Sometime Boyfriend, watch out for more than poisoned words,defend herself from the unsympathetic narrative of her best Old Friend, ignore the constant harassment of her mother, First Older Sister and others.She must deal with the attention of a rejected suitor Somebody McSomebody, a young, pathetic pistol packing neighbour who attacks her in the loo.Perhaps most terrifying of all, our narrator, Middle Sister is caught in a culture of hostile gossip whose actors compulsively invent false stories about her, disarm and imprison her in a silo of alienated silence. We wait with growing impatience under salvos of words for something to break her entrapment.Burn’s conveys the tension between Middle Sister and those closest to her and the events that surround her in a simultaneously frightening, funny and entirely convincing way. We forget the inherent contradiction between who the truly articulate Middle Sister is who is writing the text and the girl who cannot ask for help from those in a position most likely to provide it is the same person.The Middle Sister who wrote this novel may not be the author but the author knows her so well I feel it is her alter ego talking to her younger self. Burn’s describes the prison of what seems to be her own internment. There is no need for her to explain why her eminently capable narrator is incapable of helping herself.The profound message intended or not is the way this wonderful story captures a time and place, a state of mind, what is was to be living inNorthern Ireland during The Troubles. In such a milieu, such a volatile and dangerous space it is best to fain ignorance, avoid extending to much trust in others, sensible to remain silent.There is nothing as boring as didactic intent in Burn’s wonderful novel but the lessons are there. What of current day tribalism and where it could take us? Why so many closed narcissistic minds? Why the unwillingness to listen to and respect other people’s point of view? How come we never learn?Yes, it’s complicated. Let me make it even more so. Oscar Wilde writing of a much earlier phase of The Troubles wrote something like this “if only the English would learn to talk and the Irish to listen we would have a very civilised society”

I had a hard time getting into this book at first, so I tried an experiment of ordering the whispernet addition. The audible addition to this book enhanced my engagement with the book ... I think because the Irish dialect and excellence of the reader helped me focus. I don't understand why this worked in my brain, but so it was. Then I was able to capture the humor and the pathos of this period of time. Structure of the book is intriguing.
